Kansas Bill to license newer military vehicles one step closer to passing
UPDATE: KANSAS BILL TO ALLOW FOR NEWER MILITARY SURPLUS VEHICLE REGISTRATION PASSES HOUSE; MOVES TO SENATE
Legislation (H.B. 2014) has been introduced in Kansas to allow for the registration and on-road use of surplus military vehicles. Currently, only antique military vehicles more than 35 years old can be registered for road use. The bill passed the House and awaits consideration by the Senate Committee on Transportation.
- H.B. 2014 allows for the registration and road use of “military surplus vehicles”, which is defined as a vehicle with three axles, is less than 35 years old and was manufactured for use in either the United States military forces; or any country that was a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization at the time the vehicle was manufactured. The term does not include tracked vehicle.
- H.B. 2014 allows military surplus vehicles to be issued special interest license plates displaying a decal that identifies them as military surplus vehicles.
- H.B. 2014 requires an inspection of military surplus vehicles by highway patrol prior to registration, in line with current policy for all assembled, reconstructed and restored vehicles.
- H.B. 2014 recognizes the important historical and patriotic purpose of these vehicles.
- H.B. 2014 acknowledges that military surplus vehicles are becoming valued collectors’ items among the automotive community.
