Wade House historic site in Greenbush will continue its commemoration of the Civil War sesquicentennial by staging one of the largest Civil War encampments and battle re-enactments in Wisconsin on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 27-28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The 24th Annual Wade House Civil War Weekend event will re-create the 1864 Battle of Shy's Hill, where Wisconsin soldiers fought gallantly in desperate conditions.
In a scene reminiscent of what took place that fateful autumn 150 years ago, cavalry and artillery representing both sides of the conflict will skirmish at 11 a.m. each day, followed by a full-scale battle at 2 p.m. In between the action, visitors will be able to access the battlefield to get an up-close look at the men, horses and equipment that bring the American Civil War to life.
On both days, guests to the Wade House will have a chance to listen to our nation's 16th president, brought to life by one of America's premier Abraham Lincoln presenters, Fritz Klein, as he shares his concerns about the ferocious fighting, the overall war effort, and the trials to come. Visitors will also have the opportunity to enjoy Civil War music from the battlefield and home front, explore a soldier's life in camp, and learn about military life through hands-on activities in the family area.
Food and shopping are part of the weekend as well, with a wide assortment of food and beverage offerings in multiple locations. A variety of period merchants, called sutlers, will be set up on the grounds, purveying their goods and showcasing their talents. During your visit, plan to tour the Wade House stagecoach hotel, Herrling Sawmill, Dockstader Blacksmith Shop and the new Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, all of which are included in the day's admission.
Visitors will begin the special experience in Greenbush with parking just off Center Street. Special event pricing is: adults $14; students/seniors $12; children (5-17) $7; family (up to two adults and two or more dependent children 5-17) $38.
