New Orleans, LA - With blockbusters like Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Tyler Perry’s Six Triple Eight receiving buzz, this Memorial Day, learn more about The Manhattan Project which ushered in the nuclear age, The 6888th Battalion, the only all-black, all-female battalion sent overseas during World War II, and the everyday stories of people that changed the course of the war at The National WWII Museum, a must-see attraction for travelers of all ages while visiting New Orleans.
For after hours fun, the Museum has made New Orleans’ Warehouse District a night time destination by launching a first-of-its-kind family friendly entertainment spectacular called Expressions of America. Hosted by actor and veterans advocate Gary Sinise, this new technological innovation uses projection mapping to transform the museum’s outdoor campus into an immersive, cinematic theater. The Museum houses 300,000-square feet of immersive exhibits and multimedia experiences, including an exploration of the road to war and how the war was fought on the Home Front. Be sure to check out the museum's newest special exhibit, The Walt Disney Studios and World War II, which explores how one of America’s most beloved entertainment companies helped achieve Allied victory. Disney and history lovers alike may visit the exhibit from March 17 through September 24, 2023. Next up for the Museum is the debut of its new special exhibit entitled The Go for Broke Spirit: Legacy in Portraits June 30, 2023 – March 31, 2024. This exhibit focuses on freelance photographer Shane Sato’s yearlong project and first-of-its-kind portrait series featuring Nisei (second- generation Japanese American) WWII veterans who served with the segregated 442nd Regimental Combat Team and its component unit, the 100th Infantry Battalion, or as translators and interpreters with the Military Intelligence Service (MIS).
Co-founded by Band of Brothers best-selling author and historian Dr. Stephen Ambrose, The National WWII Museum offers visitors an intimate and personal view of World War II, highlighting not just the role of world leaders, but also the everyday men and women of what's said to be the greatest generation. History-buffs looking to stay near the museum can book their stay at The Higgins Hotel & Conference Center, an art deco-style property located on The National WWII Museum’s campus.
For those unable to visit the Museum, it offers free, online resources such as oral histories, transcribed interviews, videos of symposiums and documentaries.
