andersonville-park.jpg

ANDERSONVILLE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE: Andersonville National Historic Site began as a stockade built about 18 months before the end of the U.S. Civil War to hold Union Army prisoners captured by Confederate soldiers. Located deep behind Confederate lines, the 26.5-acre Camp Sumter (named for the south Georgia county it occupied) was designed for a maximum of 10,000 prisoners. At its most crowded, it held more than 32,000 men, many of them wounded and starving, in horrific conditions with rampant disease, contaminated water, and only minimal shelter from the blazing sun and the chilling winter rain. In the prison's 14 months of existence, some 45,000 Union prisoners arrived here;of those, 12,920 died and were buried in a cemetery created just outside the prison walls.

The cemetery site serving Camp Sumter was established as Andersonville National Cemetery on July 26, 1865. By 1868, the cemetery held the remains of more than 13,800 Union soldiers whose bodies had been retrieved after their deaths in hospitals, battles, or prison camps throughout the region. Andersonville National Cemetery has been used continuously since its founding and currently averages over 150 burials a year. The cemetery and associated prison site became a unit of the National Park System in 1970.

Today, Andersonville National Historic Site comprises three distinct components: the former site of Camp Sumter military prison, the Andersonville National Cemetery, and the National Prisoner of War Museum, which opened in 1998 to honor all U.S. prisoners of war in all wars. 760 POW Road, Andersonville, GA 31711, (229) 924-0343, https://www.nps.gov/ande/planyourvisit/directions.htm

Throughout its proud history of over 282 years, the Artillery Company has served with distinction in both war and peace, including service in the French Indian Wars, the War of the Revolution, at the Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812…

The museum contains one of the most extensive collections of historic artifacts. The museum’s most prized items are four 3-pound bronze cannon cast by Paul Revere in his foundry in Boston in 1798 for the State of Rhode Island. AUGUSTA MILITARY ACADEMY MUSEUM: The Museum of Augusta Military Academy is located in Fort Defiance, Virginia. The Museum building sits among stately old trees and expansive lawns on the grounds of the now-closed military academy. Fort Defiance is located eight miles north of Staunton on U.S. Route 11, the historic Valley Pike.

Charles S. Roller began teaching immediately after the War Between the States in a small school on the grounds of the neighboring Old Stone Church. He then went on to purchase the land South of the church and founded Augusta Male Academy in 1874. In the Civil War, he served in Confederate General J. E. B. Stuart's cavalry and during Reconstruction, he was elected to the Virginia General Assembly, the state's legislative body. He introduced military instruction and discipline to his students by 1879, and changed the name of the school to Augusta Military Academy in 1890. AMA was the first of several secondary-level, military academies in Virginia, and one of the first schools in the country to adopt a Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. The school had a major educational, social, and economic impact on this area of the Shenandoah Valley for over 100 years. AVIATION MUSEUM OF KENTUCKY: The Aviation Museum of Kentucky is an asset to the state, the industry, and the nation. Our programs increase and improve every year. Our volunteers are enthusiastic, our board is involved, our membership is supportive, and our staff makes good use of the Museum's limited resources. Our Museum's building at Blue Grass Field is a former FBO hangar; it was never designed for use that a Museum would expect to see. It was built before ADA codes were established, so it offers only limited access to the disabled. Most importantly, we have outgrown our display space, our office space, and our storage space. It is not good business to retrofit a 40-year-old building into something it was never meant to be, so we are raising funds for a new, custom-designed facility. The new Aviation Museum of Kentucky will be built in WestLex area of Blue Grass Airport and will meet the needs of those thousands whose lives we enrich through aviation. We welcome you to join us in building a limitless future. 4029 Airport Road - Lexington, KY, (859)231-1219museum@aviationky.orghttps://www.aviationky.org/default.asp

deland-naval-museum.jpg

DELAND NAVAL AIR STATION MUSEUM: Before it was a Naval Air Station, it was just a municipal airport. Built in the 1920s by the City of DeLand, with its first asphalt runway put in around 1936, the field served the civilian community until the U.S. Navy came calling in 1941.  Heeding the same call for service that drew thousands of young men into military service, the City of DeLand donated its airport to the cause.  The Navy bought additional property nearby, encompassing what is now the DeLand Airport, and on November 17, 1942, opened the DeLand Naval Air Station.

New facilities were constructed to house the military personnel and equipment as DeLand NAS became a major training base for Navy pilot/gunner teams flying the land-based PBO Ventura and PB4Y-2 Privateer patrol bombers, as well as the famous SBD Dauntless dive bombers, the carrier-based planes credited with the sinking of four Japanese aircraft carriers in the pivotal battle of Midway. In 1944, another carrier-based fighter, the F64 Hellcat, was added to the station’s training mission.

In March of 1946, the DeLand Naval Air Station was officially closed, the tower was shut down, and the entire field was turned over to the City of DeLand.  Some of the buildings were occupied by Florida Military School from 1956 to 1971.

50 years after the opening of the base, the DeLand Naval Air Station Museum came into being, housed in the former Master of Arms Residence, which had been donated by the City of DeLand.  Following an extensive restoration effort, the building was dedicated in November, 1995, and has become home to an impressive collection of historical artifacts, veterans’ mementos and military art that has grown steadily over the years.

In 2001, the Museum building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

FORT DELAWARE STATE PARK: Situated on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River, Fort Delaware was initially constructed in the mid-1800s to protect Wilmington and Philadelphia from enemy attack. Fort Delaware served that role through WWI. The fort was among the most state-of-the-art in the nation when it was completed and housed prisoners of war during the Civil War due to its relative isolation. Within the walls of Fort Delaware, visitors can also see Battery Torbert. Along the Prison Camp Trail lies the entrance to the mine casemate that controlled the mines that were deployed in the river in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Pea Patch Heronry is one of the largest mixed species nest colony for herons, egrets, and ibis in the eastern United States. Other nesters that can be found on the island include osprey and bald eagles. fort-sumter-and-moultrie.jpg

FORT SUMTER & FORT MOULTRIE NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK: Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park incorporates several sites around Charleston Harbor, which tell the unique stories of the people and places that shaped the United States of America.

Confederate forces fired the first shots of the Civil War upon Federal troops at Fort Sumter at 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861. The roots of that conflict are buried deep within the stories of the development of the United States. Fort Sumter would continue to serve as the focal point in Charleston throughout the Civil War.

Sullivan's Island has long served as Charleston Harbor's first line of defense against disease or foreign invasion. Quarantine stations checked every person that came into the harbor, including enslaved Africans. Later a palmetto log fort was built by Colonel Moultrie and the Second South Carolina Infantry. This fort came to be known as Fort Moultrie and was replaced and modified as technology and warfare changed through the mid-twentieth century.

The Fort Sumter Visitor Center at Liberty Square sits on the site of Gadsden's Wharf, where thousands of enslaved Africans were brought into the United States. Today the site interprets the causes and catalysis of the Civil War. 1214 Middle Street, Sullivan's Island, SC 29482, (843) 883-3123, https://www.nps.gov/fosu/learn/index.htm

fort-trumbull.jpg

FORT TRUMBULL STATE PARK: Fort Trumbull State ParkSince Colonial times Fort Trumbull served as the location of various military forts, schools and research facilities for the United States Army, Coast Guard and Navy. The first Fort Trumbull was built to protect the New London Harbor from British attack and later served as part of the country’s coastal defense system. The masonry fort (the third) that stands today was constructed between 1839 and 1852.

In 1915 the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Lifesaving Service to become the U.S. Coast Guard. Therefore the Revenue Cutter Service Academy at Fort Trumbull became the first U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and all U.S. Coast Guard training took place at Fort Trumbull.

By World War II Fort Trumbull had become home to the Coast Guard, the U. S. Maritime Service Officer Candidate School, and the Columbia University Division of War Research Underwater Sound Laboratory was established there. MILITARY MEMORIAL MUSEUM: The Military Memorial Museum is located in one of Crossville’s oldest structures, built in 1885. It served as the second county courthouse until 1905 when a fire ravaged the interior. After renovation in the 1930s, the building became an elementary-high school and library. During the 1940s it was a location for wrestling matches, a USO venue and housed various government offices until 2002 when the museum was established. The building is constructed using Crab Orchard quarried stone and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings and is included as part of the Tennessee Civil War Trails. 20 South Main Street, Crossville, TN 38555, Email: Contact@MMMUC.org, Phone: 931-250-5525, https://www.militarymemorialmuseum-tn.org/

MILITARY MUSEUM OF NORTH FLORIDA: Reynolds Industrial Park, where the Museum is located, is the former Naval Air Station, Green Cove Springs, Benjamin Lee Field. The base was the main training base for the F6F Hellcat fighter which had over 5000 shoot-downs in WWII. It was the US Navy’s main Zero killer. Visitors can walk in the shadows of WWII fighter pilots and heroes to include General Roy Geiger, the father of Marine Corps aviation, the Black Sheep Squadron pilots, Joe Kennedy (JFK’s Brother), Ed McMahon (Johnny Carson’s sidekick) and many more. The base was also home to the Navy’s 600 ship Atlantic mothball fleet after the war.

On September 11, 1940, the U.S. Navy made it official, opening Naval Air Station Lee Field, just south of Green Cove Springs. The Air Station was named in honor of Ensign Benjamin Lee who had lost his life in a crash at Killingholm, England, during World War I on October 28, 1918. Benjamin Lee Field was designed to train pilots for landing operations on aircraft carriers during WWII. The facility was renamed Naval Air Station Green Cove Springs in August 1943.

The Military Museum of North Florida honors ALL service men and women from EVERY branch of the service. There are pictures and displays of uniforms, weapons and equipment from each of our major conflicts. You can see what it must have been like to live on the western front in World War I. The equipment and photos from the Vietnam War show how far warfare had progressed since WWI. There are examples of vehicles from the Korean era through Vietnam and beyond. The museum has many special events including displays of military art like these from noted artist John Shaw. Among other events are our Military History Day, D-Day Commemoration, National Holidays and other memorable days in military history. 1 Bunker Ave. Green Cove Springs, FL 32043, 904-863-3527, militarymuseumnf@aol.com, https://www.themilitarymuseumofnorthflorida.com/

eigth-airforce-museum.jpg

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE MIGHTY EIGHTH AIR FORCE: One leader will be forever linked to the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, Major General Lewis E. Lyle. The museum’s rotunda is named in his honor. Maj Gen Lyle flew with the Eighth in World War II. He piloted the oooLD Soljer for 16 missions and flew more than 70 additional missions in other B-17s.

Immediately following the war, Lyle dedicated himself to helping the families of the fallen. Locating graves and handling paperwork were just two of the ways he continued to serve.
Then he turned towards the future and how these remarkable men, and their stories, could be forever preserved and shared. Unlike so many of the memorials around the world, there is no battlefield in the sky where loved ones can remember their fallen. Lyle knew there needed to be one place where the veterans of the Eighth, the families, and all those who would come after, could learn about the sacrifices and honor all who served in the Mighty Eighth.

Only a few miles from where the Eighth was activated in Savannah, this dream was realized with the Mighty Eighth Heritage Center; today’s National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force.

Unlike places such as Lexington and Concord, Gettysburg and Normandy, we cannot experience battlefields at 25,000 feet. We cannot visit the scene of the aerial conflict or recreate the battles. This history is known only from the records and preserved experiences of those who lived through such moments.

Preserving and presenting this history lies at the core of the museum’s mission. World War II Eighth Air Force veteran and long-time Mighty Eighth Museum leader and supporter, Frank D. Murphy “100th BG/418th BS” said it best: “It is incumbent on us… to ensure that their deeds and dedication will be honored and preserved from discredit or oblivion.” 175 Bourne AvenuePooler, GA 31322, 912-748-8888, https://www.mightyeighth.org/

In 1902, The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of South Carolina purchased the building, saving it from demolition. Within a year, it was opened to the public.

westerly-armory.jpg

WESTERLY ARMORY MUSEUM: The Westerly Armory housed provisional and volunteer companies such as Company E, volunteers under charter and, for several years, an infantry company.

The Fifth Company was formed in 1908 and known as the Coast Artillery Corps, Rhode Island National Guard. In 1917, the Fifth was drafted into Federal service, and in March of that year, the Company (109 officers and soldiers strong) gathered in the westerly Armory to stand ready.

In the time when the Fifth Company had gone to war, the need arose and the call came for a home defense regiment. The 4th Company was an offshoot of the Westerly constabulary which, in 1917, was organized for the purpose of home defense. The Company consisted of almost all business men in addition to men too old for Federal service. At the close of World War I, the company was mustered out. Westerly was, for several years, without a military company.

in 1921, Westerly raised a new company, known as the Fifth Company Coast Artillery Corp (RING). In only 10 days, a company of 52 men was both organized and federally recognized. The Company was later changed from the Fifth to the 349th Company, and then to Battery E, 243d Coast Artillery (HD), National Guard.

The Westerly Armory last housed the 169th Military Police Company, Rhode Island National Guard who abandoned the Armory in 1996 and who were dispersed into Middletown and Providence. Their motto, “Stand Ready,” echoed the sentiment of earlier soldiers who drilled in the Armory’s hall.

Many veterans of the community went to war, proudly stepping out of the great doors of the Westerly Armory. 41 Railroad Avenue, Westerly, Rhode Island 02891, Phone: 401-596-8554 , FAX: 401-596-9529, Email: westerlyarmory@aol.com, https://westerlyarmory.com/
