“Snapshots” acknowledges that period photos canbe the best form of primary information for collectors. Earl Roberts sent this photo of 1st Lt. Bob Pleatner, ca. 1940. Pleatner was a career soldier, working for the Dept. of the Army at the Pentagon until he retired.

Taken near the south of London, this photo shows a group of airmen from 410th BG, 9th USAAF and civilians looking at the impact crater from a V-1 buzz bomb in late September 1944. The airman in the center is holding up the only casualties: Two rabbits that likely ended up in someone’s stew pot later that day. Kent Bedford had heard about this photo from his father but only recently discovered it. If Kent’s Dad hadn’t spoken about the incident, the information about the two rabbits would have been lost to the ages.

Harold Ratzburg snapped a picture of this photo showing boys collecting helmets in post-war Germany. It was on display in a German museum.
