SIX-VOLT STARTER UPGRADES
I have noticed that there is much interest in this column in regard to starting problems with 6-volt systems. There is a way to improve starting on older cars with foot operated starter switches. Voltage drop is usually due to small cable diameter and long length. Henry Ford knew how to save a nickel on copper by putting a solenoid between the battery and the starter switch, shortening the cables and improving starting reliability. I use a Ford 6-volt solenoid on my 1941 Willys MB, saving 30% in cable length. The original floor switch now activates the solenoid. No one has noticed the change unless I point it out. (This will not help if the switch is mounted on the starter.)
